Magnetically sensitive constant-current images of the Mn monolayer on W(110) (top panels) and corresponding line sections (bottom panels) taken with a ferromagnetic Fe-coated tip at external fields of 0 T (a), 1 T (b) and 2 T (c). As sketched in the insets, the external field rotates the tip magnetization from in-plane (a) to out-of-plane (c), shifting the position of maximum spin contrast. This proves that the Mn layer does not exhibit a spin-density wave but rather a spin spiral rotating in a plane orthogonal to the surface. (Tunnelling parameters: I = 2 nA, U = 30 mV.)
