The Discovery of the Hobbit, by Mike Morwood and Penny Van Oosterzee, tells the story of one of the most controversial hominid fossil finds of recent times. Morwood (a co-author on the 'hobbit' paper published in Nature) and science writer Van Oosterzee describe the hostile welcome that Homo floresiensis faced, notably the claims that it was a pathological specimen of modern humans. Henry Gee, the Nature editor responsible for accepting the paper, reviews the book and adds a little more background to the story.
