Defending biodiversity
The ecosystem in the upper Amazonian region of Sierra del Divisor in Peru is under siege. Settlers are pouring in; fish, skins, bushmeat and exotic pets such as macaws and squirrel monkeys are on sale in the local markets. Can anything be done in the face of such an onslaught? One idea being tried is the rapid biological inventory, rather like a biological version of rescue archaeology. Thomas Hayden joined a Field Museum 'RBI' team to see how it's done.
