Companies set up by academics are proliferating — but can they secure the investment they need to succeed? Ichiko Fuyuno investigates.
When Xueliang Song moved from northeast China to Japan 12 years ago, he was planning an orthodox research career at a university or a major corporation. But after Song earned his PhD in electronic engineering at the University of Tokyo in 2004, his lab head asked him whether he would like to set up a company based on his research.
