When Xueliang Song moved from northeast China to Japan 12 years ago, he was planning an orthodox research career at a university or a major corporation. But after Song earned his PhD in electronic engineering at the University of Tokyo in 2004, his lab head asked him whether he would like to set up a company based on his research.
