Geophysicists are racing to understand a recently discovered phenomenon deep in the Earth. David Cyranoski joins them.

It's a place where everything goes weird. Some 2,700 kilometres inside the Earth, just above the boundary between the planet's solid mantle and its liquid outer core, is a layer where seismic waves act strangely.
