Pharmaceutical stocks have seriously underperformed on the general US stock market for the past two years, as the sector loses some of its cachet. In 2003, for example, when the broadly based Standard & Poor's 500 index (S&P 500) produced an annual return of 29%, pharma managed less than a third of that.
