Two papers going live on Nature AOP this week present proof-of-principle tests in mice of ways of making human pluripotent stem cells with a difference. Both aim to satisfy the religious, ethical and political objections of opponents of embryonic stem-cell research. First reactions to these papers are reported in the News pages.
