This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been won by three researchers who pioneered the understanding and use of a very general class of reactions that aid the construction of carbon-based (organic) molecules.Yves Chauvin of the French Petroleum Institute in Rueil-Malmaison showed how these 'metathesis' reactions, long familiar to the petrochemicals industry, actually work.
