Ralph J. Cicerone began his six-year term as president of the US National Academy of Sciences Academy on 1 July. His research has included work on radiative forcing of climate change and the role of nitrous oxide and methane in global warming, which could come in handy in a post-Kyoto world. He spoke to Nature about his hopes and fears.
