Early next month the MARSIS instrument onboard Europe's orbiting Mars Express spacecraft is scheduled to begin scanning the northern hemisphere of Mars. If all goes well, it will be the first of a new generation of planetary radar experiments to see action. MARSIS will use ground-penetrating radar to probe below the surface to look for the apparent presence or absence of reservoirs of groundwater — but that is only part of the story.
