Model animals, consisting of silicon wafers supporting cell cultures from various vital organs, could revolutionize drug and toxicology testing. Animal experimentation is likely to remain important for the foreseeable future, but 'rat-on-a-chip' research may soon bear fruit in the form of less frequent use of lab animals.
