The end is near but eradication will not be as simple as once thought.

During the next 12 months the world could see the end of the crippling disease polio. That is, if sufficiently high levels of vaccination are achieved in the last few countries with endemic poliovirus, and if surveillance for the paralysis caused by polio manages to find all new cases1.
