Signal transduction: Thumbs up for inactivation
Holger Rehmann1 & Johannes L. Bos1
Abstract
Cellular signalling pathways depend on the proper activation and inactivation of mediators. New structural information reveals an unusual mechanism by which one such mediator, Rap1, is switched off.
Proteins of the Ras family regulate a variety of cellular processes — ranging from proliferation to adhesion — in response to information received at the cell surface. These proteins, which are part of a broader class known as G proteins, are in essence simple on/off switches.
