Metabolic and regulatory networks may be expanded by using high-throughput phenotyping and gene expression data coupled with the predictions of a computational model. If model predictions are consistent with experimental observations, the network is adequately characterized. If not, the model identifies a knowledge gap and may be used to update, validate and generate hypotheses about organism function. Accuracy refers to the percentage of model predictions that agree with experimental data; coverage indicates the percentage of experimental changes predicted correctly by the model.
