Universities battle for extra funds in bid to boost quality

Germany's top universities are being asked to compete for top-up grants from the federal government to help them pack more of a punch internationally.Five winning institutions will each get extra funding of euro dollar50 million (US$60 million) every year for five years from 2006, in a bold scheme designed to help them compete on a global stage with the likes of Harvard University and the University of Tokyo.
