Abstract
Peering down an eyepiece is becoming a thing of the past. Tim Chapman takes a look into the digital world of a new generation of microscopes and imaging systems.
If anything has remained constant over centuries of biological research, it is the value of the evidence of your own eyes, gained by examining specimens — living or dead — in as much detail as possible. Today's microscopes are, of course, a world away from the optical systems used by the pioneers of biology.
