Neurobiology: Double trouble for neurons
Mark E. Fortini1
Abstract
Mutations in the presenilin protein are associated with Alzheimer's disease. It now seems that mutant presenilin could wreak havoc on neuronal functions by triggering the activation of certain genes.
Working in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1901, Alois Alzheimer encountered a middle-aged patient named Auguste D. suffering from confusion and memory loss1.
