Cell biology: Join the crowd
R. John Ellis1 & Allen P. Minton2
Abstract
Cells are packed with large molecules. The ramifications of this 'crowding' for a wide range of intracellular processes are only now becoming more generally understood.
All cells contain lots of big molecules, especially proteins, nucleic acids and complex sugars. The very high total concentration of these molecules, or 'macromolecular crowding', has energetic consequences that could affect many aspects of cellular function.
