Telecommunications: A boost for fibre optics

A possible solution to the need to expand fibre-optic capacities presents itself in the form of a new way of amplifying the information-carrying light transmissions. But turning principle into practice will require more work.

In fibre-optic communications, a modulated light beam is sent through a fibre made of silica glass. The modulation carries the information to be transmitted, and the light beam is confined inside the fibre core by the large difference in refractive index between the core and a cladding layer.
