Floral fortunes
The saffron crocus, Crocus sativus (shown here), was at the heart of the dye industry in Britain in the Middle Ages, and gave its name to the town of Saffron Walden in Essex. But the flower's popularity gradually declined as foreign crocuses with wider ranges of colour were introduced into the country.
