Planetary science: The north–south martian divide

Abstract
Some of the differences between the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars may stem from asymmetry in the planet's atmospheric circulation, and the resulting distribution of water and dust.
Mars is an asymmetrical planet. Its northern hemisphere is relatively smooth and free of craters, with a large, permanent ice-cap that is mainly composed of water.
