Earth science: Flow and fabric deep down
Karen M. Fischer
Abstract
Conditions in Earth's mantle can be inferred from seismic-wave velocities which reveal areas of anisotropy. Evidence emerges of such an area at mid-mantle level, associated with a subducting tectonic plate.
Imaging the Earth's interior is a challenging business. Drilling can only scratch the surface, so much of our information has to be inferred from the behaviour of seismic waves.
