Ion channels: Swimming with sperm
David L. Garbers
Abstract
Mice become infertile if they lack the gene encoding a newly discovered sperm-specific ion channel. Sperm are produced in normal quantities, but have trouble moving.
Spermatozoa rely on calcium ions to function. And, like the cells from which they are produced, sperm seem to express several channels that allow calcium ions to enter1.
