Plant biology: Mobile protein signals cell fate
Sarah Hake
Abstract
In plant roots, different cell types are organized in a well-defined pattern: each cell knows exactly where it is and what it should do. A molecule that tells cells where they are has now been discovered.
In plants, the fate of each cell is determined mainly by its location. Plant cells 'know' if they are on the top or bottom of a leaf, the inside or outside of a stem, or near or far from vascular tissue, and they become specialized (differentiate) accordingly.
