The nineteenth century scientists who studied the oceans were explorers, not hypothesis testers. Mark Schrope finds that modern-day oceanographers want to revive this pioneering spirit.

The scientists on board HMS Challenger had little idea what they would find when they sailed from Portsmouth in December 1872. The voyage, the first thorough survey of the world's oceans, is now recognized as the start of modern oceanography.
