How do we cope with scientific terms that have two different definitions?

Technical terms abound in science; indeed, much of the science taught in schools seems more concerned with the memorizing of terms than with the understanding of concepts. A common defence of this complex scientific language is that it allows accurate communication among those who have mastered the appropriate vocabulary.
