Astronomy: The red ragged edge

It is not particularly surprising that the properties of asteroids should change between the inner and outer parts of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. After all, this belt marks the transition between the rocky planets of the inner Solar System and the gas giants of the outer Solar System.
