Molecular biology: Small subunit, big science

Ribosomes are the cell's protein factories, and consist of two subunits, the large and the small. The structure of the small subunit of a bacterial ribosome has now been solved at atomic resolution, and is described in papers by Ramakrishnan and colleagues on pages 327 and 340 of this issue1, 2.
