Britain's science bounties
Abstract
Announcements of enhanced funding for researchers and equipment are almost as good as they look.
Announcements over the past two weeks by the British government of major increases in funding for science (see page 446 and Nature 406, 335; 2000) are good news, and go a long way to meet the most urgent needs of the UK science base. Apart from the boost in research output that can now be expected, aspects to celebrate include substantially increased pay for researchers at the top and bottom of their career paths and the significant and more sensibly directed investment into laboratory equipment up to 2004.
