Cancer: p53 sends nucleotides to repair DNA

The p53 protein actively suppresses tumour formation; when it is mutated, the road is open for the development of several forms of cancer. Mutations in p53 or the pathway that directly regulates it have been found in over 80% of human tumours, so there has been intense research into the p53 gene and its product.
