There can be few areas in biology that have given rise to as many misunderstandings and confusions as that of the relationship of genes to the development of behaviour. On the one hand, eminent scientists such as Stephen Rose can declare, "...after all, there aren't really even genes 'for' blue or brown eyes, let alone such complex historically and socially shaped features of human existence as sexual desire or urban guerrillas".
