An ecological perspective on reefs and reef organisms might seem a shaky basis for a book dealing largely with ancient environments and extinct organisms from geological samples. However, the requirements and opportunities involved in competition for space on reefs, and how these have changed and developed over evolutionary time, is a central theme in Rachel Wood's book.
