Rush rescue programme has achieved mixed results

When the Wissenschaftsrat, Germany's science council, was called in to redesign east Germany's scientific landscape after reunification, its prime aim was to rescue the best of the DDR's science. At the same time, it also wanted to make the most of a unique opportunity to explore novel avenues of science.
