Immunology: Wavering on commitment

It has the garb of an authentic immature B lymphocyte, but this progenitor blood cell actually has other agendas. If it is denied the transcription factor Pax5, and so cannot proceed any further down the path towards becoming a mature antibody-producing cell, this versatile cell can instead become a T lymphocyte or a natural killer cell, or assume the guise of a number of different bone-marrow-derived cell types: an antigen-presenting dendritic cell, a bacterium-engulfing macrophage, a bone-resorbing osteoclast or even a bactericidal granulocyte.
