Apoptosis: Dead end for neurodegeneration?
Christian Haass1
Fatal neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the death of neurons, and one goal of biomedical research is to slow the progression of such diseases by inhibiting this process. Work published by Ona et al.1 on page 263of this issue, and by Gervais et al.2 in Cell, could provide a basis for therapeutic treatment of two neurodegenerative disorders — Huntington's disease and Alzheimer's disease, respectively.
- Christian Haass is at the Adolf Butenandt Institute, Department of Biochemistry, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich 80336, Germany.
