As a patent lawyer, I read with interest your report on the European efforts to persuade the United States to switch to the first-to-file system for determining priority on patentable inventions1. While the first-to-file system appears to be simpler, and the norm outside the United States, it would be a mistake to abandon the American system based on 'first to invent'.
