For northern Europeans, the winter of 1995-96 was a harsh reminder of the 1960s and early 1970s, when some feared the return of the Little Ice Age. Between November 1995 and February 1996 average temperatures were 2-4 °C below normal over a region stretching from Scandinavia through Central Europe to the Black Sea.
