Insects have exquisite chemosensory faculties1, 2, 3, — some can sense pheromones from several miles away. Yet although the genes for olfactory receptors in vertebrates4, 5 and the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans6 have been known for years, their insect counterparts have remained elusive.
