Photosynthesis:  A crystal clear view

Photosynthetic bacteria, algae and plants have developed efficient systems to capture and convert sunlight into chemical energy. They produce about ten billion tons of carbohydrates annually, equivalent to eight times mankind's energy consumption in 1990.
