Apoptosis:  Clues in the p53 murder mystery

The paper by Polyak et al. on page 300 of this issue1 is a bold step towards understanding why expression of the oncosuppressor protein p53 leads to cell death. The issue is important because p53 forms part of a 'fast-track' connection between nuclear DNA damage and the complex but now relatively well-defined cellular apparatus that is responsible for death by apoptosis (Fig. 1
