Sixty years after that book appeared, increasing pressure on the world's dryer croplands makes the development of less damaging forms of crop production ever more urgent. Hence the sponsorship, by the Land Institute of Salina, Kansas, of a workshopFootnote 1 to explore the scientific issues generated by the institute's radical solution — the development of a perennial, multi-species agriculture.
