A big book of the human genome

Nature's Genome Directory, the largest compilation yet of published data about the human genome, appears today. Here Peter Goodfellow discusses the first paper, which deals with the information to be gleaned from almost 300,000 partial sequences of complementary DNA (expressed sequence tags or ESTs). Overleaf, Peter Little assesses the mapping studies presented in the other five papers in the directory.
