First steps on the ladder

ONE of the late Bernd Matthias's rules for finding new superconducting materials was "Never listen to theorists." On first sight this appears to be borne out by the report of the absence of superconductivity in the hole-doped 'ladder' compound La1SrCuO2 5 by Hiroi and Takano1 on page 41 of this issue.
