3H-concanavalin A binding of X-irradiated human fibroblasts

Abstract

STUDIES on the lectin-binding capacity of plasma membranes form a valuable approach for the detection of various alterations in the glycoprotein components of membrane structures. In studying the effect of ionising radiation on the Golgi complex as one of the main structures for glycoprotein biosynthesis or assembly1, we wanted to obtain quantitative data for the characterisation of the possible radiation-induced changes of plasma membrane glycoproteins. Using 3H-concanavalin A (3H-con A), specific lectin for glucose- and mannose-containing receptors2, we observed a temporary change in the binding capacity of X-irradiated human fibroblasts.
