Upper Atmosphere Emission Spectrum at Millimetre Wavelengths

Abstract

THE far-infrared properties of the atmosphere have been studied chiefly in solar absorption measurements from high mountain sites1–3 and aircraft4. Gebbie et al.5 have surveyed the atmospheric emission spectrum from 15 to 60 cm−1 from an aircraft. We report here the first observation from aircraft altitudes of the sky emission spectrum between 5 and 20 cm−1, with an instrumental resolution of 0.1 cm−1.
