Abstract
Clarke, Howell and Brain have recently presented evidence which suggests that more than one hominid taxon is represented at Swartkrans in South Africa1. They demonstrated that parts of a cranium and most of the left portion of a face, SK 847, fit together with a left temporal SK 846b and the maxilla SK 80. The maxilla was originally placed in the taxon “Telanthropus capensis”2, but the genus was subsequently sunk and the specimens were transferred to Homo erectus3, and later inappropriately suggested for membership in “Homo habilis”4.
