THERE has recently been considerable interest in the crystal chemistry of the f-electron transition elements. The often unusual co-ordination arrangements found around these rather large metal atoms may in some cases be connected with f-orbital participation in the bonding. Protactinium is of particular interest because of the proximity of the 5f and 6d energy levels, but few detailed structural studies of protactinium compounds have yet been reported.
