An Unusual Amino Sugar Derivative from the Cell Wall of Penicillium notatum

DURING the course of an investigation into the chemistry of the cell wall of Penicillium notatum an unusual amino sugar was detected in acid hydrolysates of the walls. It was present in only small amounts, but was easily visible by paper chromatography. The material was isolated from a 4 normal hydrochloric acid hydrolysate (carried out at 100° C for 24 h) and was purified by elution from Whatman 3 MM paper using solvent system B. It gave a positive reaction with the silver nitrate¹, aniline phosphate², ninhydrin and Elson–Morgan³ sprays, suggesting that the compound is probably a 2-deoxy, 2-amino sugar.
