Abstract
IN a recent communication on the evidence for life on Mars1, I discussed the seasonal wave of darkening and associated changes in the polarization of the dark areas. The explanation of these phenomena which I preferred was a combination of interpretations advanced by G. P. Kuiper and D. B. McLaughlin. I now believe that the rationale for this model, the principal feature of which is the seasonal transport of dust on and off the dark areas, can be further improved.
