Inter-graft Transmission of Cytoplasmic Male Sterility

Abstract
GRAFT transmission of cytoplasmic male sterility in Petunia1–3 has many similarities to graft transmission of plant viruses3. As yet, however, the entity responsible for the sterility has not been isolated or identified. In this communication, we report results of investigations in which the male sterility factor was transmitted by grafting from Petunia through stems of a tobacco plant to Petunia and the failure of the factor to induce male sterility in tobacco itself.
